The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), said yesterday (22) that the chief clerk who is also the development officer of the Chenkallady Eravur Patru Pradeshiya Sabha and coordinating secretary to the parliamentarian of the Batticaloa District, were arrested on 21 June while accepting a Rs 1.5 million bribe from a land owner.
Ceylon Today learns that the Coordinating Secretary is a brother of State Minister of Youth and Sports Sathasivam Viyalendiran.
According to information, a landowner from Kattankudy subdivided his land and sold it to many people. When the new land owners went to the PS to acquire authorisation to construct houses, the official had alleged that the Deeds were forged. The purchasers had then gone to the original owner in Kattankudi and alerted what the Chief clerk at the PS had told them.
Over this, he called the officer at the PS to advise him that he had purchased land legitimately. At this point, the two officials had requested for a bribe of Rs 2mn to release the title Deeds and agreed for Rs 1.5 million, which he promised to pay when they met at a hotel.
The landowner promptly notified CIABOC that he would be present at a hotel in Batticaloa at 6.30 p.m. The Minister’s brother and the development officer received the money from the landlord, and while counting the money, the CIABOC squad rounded them up and arrested them. The money was confiscated and the two suspects were handed over to the Batticaloa Police for further investigation.
