Minister of Ports, Shipping and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva said that there is a big demand for jobs for Sri Lankans on commercial and luxury ships.
However, he stated that close to 3,000 who had obtained technical training and had still not received practical training could apply for such jobs.
He said getting the necessary licences to serve on ships has hit a snag presently and stressed that new regulations will be introduced to amend existing laws.
The Minister added that presently around 16,000 Sri Lankans are engaged in various maritime jobs.
He was speaking at a recent discussion held with representatives of institutions engaged in training youths for jobs in the shipping industry.
