Two Sri Lankan umpires for Malaysia Open


Lakpriya Edirisinghe the experienced Badminton World Federation Umpire and Badminton Asia Umpire Upul Gamlath will leave for Malaysia next week to officiate at the Malaysia Open 2022 (28 June – 3 July) and Malaysia Masters 2022 (5 July – 10 July) tournaments.

Both tournaments are premier tournaments in Badminton World Federation (BWF) calendar, and all top world ranking players will compete for prize money of USD 675,000 and USD 360,000 respectively.

Lakpriya is a product of Asoka Vidyalaya Colombo. He is a former National ranked Badminton player (1993 to 2005) and has won many titles. Later he played at National level and reached the semi-final.

He started his umpiring career in 1995 and at present is a Badminton World Federation qualified Umpire. He has officiated in more than 100 International tournaments around the world. He was the first Sri Lankan Badminton umpire to officiate the last Paralympics held in Tokyo.

He also runs his own Lakpriya Edirisinghe Badminton Academy at Ragama where most of the badminton players from the suburbs go for training.

Upul Gamlath is an employee at Bank of Ceylon. He qualified as a Badminton Asia level Umpire in 2018. At present, he is the Tournament Secretary of Nationalized Services Badminton Association.

Gamlath has toured many Asian countries to officiate in top-level tournaments.
