PMB rice to be sold below market price – Minister

Rice manufactured and distributed by the Paddy Marketing Board (PMB) will be released to the market next week at a price lower than the controlled price, Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Accordingly, rice under the brand name PMB Rice will be made available in the market in Colombo next week.

Amaraweera instructed PMB Chairman, Neil de Alwis, to immediately commence the programme and rice will be distributed in packets of 5 and 10 kg and will be sold by the National Food Promotion Board lorries at various locations in Colombo.

PMB plans to sell 200,000 packets of rice in the first batch in Colombo. Amaraweera stated that this programme will be launched with the aim of solving the demand for rice in Colombo and its suburbs while contributing to the PMB in controlling the price of rice in the market.

He added that the Sathosa Supermarket chain and other supermarkets will distribute rice under the PMB Rice brand throughout the country.
