Convert Russian credit line to buy essential goods

Leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) MP Wimal Weerawansa has requested the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence to make a written request to the Russian Government to convert Russia’s credit line to buy military equipment to buy essential commodities for the public. He said that over half of the credit line is yet to be utilised.

He made these remarks following yesterday’s (21) special meeting between independent MPs and the Russian Ambassador in Sri Lanka.

Weerawansa said they went for this special discussion because they are not satisfied with the Government’s answers regarding the possibility of obtaining gas, fertiliser and coal from the Russia.

He also said the Ambassador said although they could not help a bankrupt country financially, the Government of Russia would not hesitate to provide humanitarian aid.

Furthermore, the Ambassador said the discussion with regard to that should be taken at the level of the Presidents of two countries.

MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara who attended the meeting also said there should be an inter-Governmental commission between two countries.

MP Udaya Gammanpila also participated in the discussion.
