Wimal pleads innocence


Independent MP Wimal Weerawansa on Friday (17) informed Colombo High Court Judge Navaratne Marasinghe, that he was innocent of the charges filed against him by Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), where he has been accused of accruing income exceeding Rs. 7.5 million, while serving as a Cabinet Minister.

Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena prosecuted on behalf of the Attorney General’s Department. She stated that the charge sheet filed initially against the accused, had been amended by the prosecution and she submitted it to Court.

Accordingly, the amended charge sheet was read out to the accused and the former Minister maintained that he was innocent of all the charges levelled against him.

Later, further proceedings of the trial were fixed for 28 June.

The Bribery Commission has charged Weerawansa, before the High Court, with amassing the said amount while serving as a Cabinet Minister from 1 January 2010 up to 31 December 2014 and for violating Provisions contained in the Bribery Act.
