Soldiers fire into air to quell tense situ


Soldiers fired into the air to quell a tense situation that took place near a petrol station in the Vishwamadu neighbourhood of Kilinochchi between a group of civilians who had gone to get fuel and soldiers on 18 June.

Residents said, the turmoil was sparked by an incident where a person who had come to collect fuel disrupted Army duty near an Army checkpoint in Vishvamadu.

When the Army tried to restrain the unruly person, a group of persons near the petrol station had obstructed the duty of the officers and had attacked them with bottles, and behaved in an unruly manner.

Police said additional troops were called in to bring the situation under control and that Army personnel fired into the air to control the unruly crowd.Three soldiers and two civilians were injured in the incident.

Two persons have been taken into custody in connection with the incident, the military spokesman said.
