Renowned veteran actress Leonie Kotelawala has passed away today (19).
Her son revealed that she had been ill for some time and passed away this morning at home.
She was 78 years old at the time of her death and her last rites will be held at the Borella Cemetery on Wednesday, he said.
Kotelawala started acting at the young age of 17 and earned a prestigious name for herself in Sri Lanka’s film industry.
Her role as Kusum’s mother-in-law in Sanjeewa Pushpakumara’s film Davena Vihangun is one of the best films she contributed as an actor and in 1962, she won the Best Actress Award for her performance in the play Mehew Lokaya, becoming the first Sri Lankan stage actress to win the award.
