Nine years jail for paedophile


Colombo High Court Judge Navaratne Marasinghe yesterday (16) convicted a 32-year-old father of one, on charges of sexually abusing a five-year-old boy, and sentenced him to nine years Rigorous Imprisonment, 13 years after the incident.

Announcing the verdict of the trial, the Judge stated that testimony put forth during the case had proved beyond a reasonable doubt, that the accused had duped the victim 13 years ago on the pretext of offering him biscuits and coaxing him to go to an upstair room of the victim’s grandmother’s house, after which the accused had proceeded to sexually molest the minor.

Judge Marasinghe added that for crimes of this nature, no leniency can be shown by the Court and maintained that the sternest punishment has to be meted out, to the perpetrators of such crimes.

Besides the nine-year RI imposed on the convict, the Judge also ordered the convict to pay a fine of Rs 15,000 and noted that failure to pay it will result in a further three-month lenient prison term.

The Court also ordered the convict to pay compensation of Rs 200,000 to the victim and warned failure to carry it out would result in an additional one-year in jail.

The AG had indicted the suspect, before the High Court, over the said crime which had occurred on 13 February 2009 and on charges of having flouted Provisions contained in Section 365 of the Penal Code.
