Laboratory services are on the verge of collapse and patients may face difficulties in even obtaining blood or urine tests, President of the Government Medical Officers’ Forum Dr. Rukshan Bellana said.
He added, the focus has been on ensuring a steady supply of pharmaceuticals while neglecting laboratory services. “This could result in serious issues relating to maintenance of laboratory services making even basic tests unavailable.”
Dr.Bellana added laboratory services are mainly for diagnosis and prevention of diseases while pharmaceuticals are for treatment of diseases due to which focus of the healthcare system should be on prevention and early diagnosis as opposed to focusing on treatment.
“Foreign suppliers have also blacklisted local agents for the non-payment for laboratory equipment,” he said adding that the matter could be sorted out easily by understanding the straight forward solutions.
