A mother who threw her five-year-old child into the Kelani River from the Kadirana Bridge and attempted to die by suicide on Wednesday (15) night was remanded till 30 June.
She was produced before the Welisara Magistrate yesterday (16) after the Police took her into custody on Wednesday night.
The 42-year-old woman is a resident of Wattala. According to Police, she has been suffering from a long-term illness. Her husband had passed away and she has another child.
The woman had thrown the child into the KelaniRiver around 8:00 p.m. on 15 June and had attempted to jump into the river shortly after. She was rescued by residents and handed over to a nearby Police post.
A search operation was conducted utilising fishing trawlers, but the child is yet to be found. Police sought the assistance of the Navy.
