Train services could falter due to shortages

There is a high risk of severe breakdowns in train services due to a severe shortage of locomotive engine oils, railway sleepers and other essential items, Ceylon Today reliably learns.

According to a top official at Sri Lanka Railways, there is a very limited supply of locomotive engine oils and other essential items, and if the Cabinet does not address the issue, there could be dangerous consequences and completely halt train operations. The official on the condition of anonymity said even though the Ministry of Transportation has taken steps to increase train trips, trains can only travel as far as their operating capacity allows.

It was also mentioned that, while the Sri Lanka Railways has some train compartments, there are not enough railway sleepers, which are expected to arrive at the beginning of next year.
