Customs loses Rs 115M

A nearly Rs 115 million loss has been incurred by Sri Lanka Customs as duty  due to incorrect classification of 33 used cars in 2017 contrary to provisions of Gazette Notification No. 1933/13 dated 21 September 2015.

This was revealed when the Import and Export Control Department was summoned before the Committee on Public Accounts (COPA) recently.

The said Gazette Notification was issued for vehicles subject to Licensing Control and Instructions given by the Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade and the Minister of State for Imports and Exports.

Department officials informed COPA that investigations in this regard have been handed over to the CID. The COPA Chairman instructed to submit a report on its progress to the Committee within two weeks.
