Yasitha bags Men’s Open Title

Yashitha de Silva of MAS Holding edged Thehan Wijemanne in a thrilling three setter (2/6, 6/3, 7/5) to clinch the men’s open title at the 107th Colombo Tennis Championship worked off at SLTA clay courts yesterday.

The first set was a jaw dropping master class by Thehan, who came out incredibly crisply and cleanly, steering his high-rpm forehands precisely where he wanted them and using his defence-to-offence abilities to slide and stretch and flick balls back with aggression.

Thehan found his best level when it mattered most in the first set. He landed multiple aces, ripped a forehand winner from outside the tramline and forced his opponent into backhand errors to dominate the proceeding and take
a one-set lead.

Despite the excellent rallies and deft touches from both competitors in the second set, it was Yasitha who bounced back to come away with the points. Things were much more competitive in the second set, with Yasitha finally earning his first break and getting the limited crowd behind him. It was still never easy to get points against the experienced Thehan, who was all over the place. At the final stage of the second set, Yasitha’s experience came into play again, and he began winning the key points when it mattered most to win the second set 6-3.

With the momentum on his side, Yasitha continued to dominate and set the tone to frustrate his opponent in the late exchanges in the third set. He continued to go for his shots from the outset, in addition to effectively employing the drop shot, which drew repeated errors from his opponent to wrap up the set (7-5) and match in a thriller.
