The Cabinet has approved the closure of all State institutions on Fridays for the next three months, with the exception of essential services; water, electricity, health, defence, education, transportation, port, and aviation services. Given the current fuel shortage which has disrupted passenger transportation, the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Council and Local Government has proposed that the State officials be granted one working day off per week.
Subject Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena has also proposed that they be provided with necessary facilities to engage in agricultural activities in their home gardens or in a land elsewhere in preparation for the impending food crisis.
Co-Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said the decision to close public institutions isdue to the fuel crisis, and that the focus on providing facilities to engage in agricultural activities is primarily for public officers who would not be working from home.
Secretary to the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Council and Local Government, M.M.P.K. Mayadunne said that the relevant Circular would be issued today.
