More showers, thundershowers expected

The Meteorology Department yesterday (14) said showers or thundershowers could intensify in the Uva, Eastern, and North Central provinces in the evening or night today (15).

Meteorologist Shadhushka Premachandra said several spells of showers could occur in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North Western Provinces, and Galle and Matara Districts.

Premachandra said showers or thundershowers can be expected at several places in the Uva, Central, and North-Central provinces and Vavuniya and Mullaitivu districts in the afternoon or in the night. Fairly heavy showers above 50 millimetres can be expected at some places in the aforesaid areas.

Premachandra also cautioned the public of possible strong winds and lightning strikes and advised precautionary measures to minimise damage caused by temporary strong winds and lightning strikes.

Meanwhile, the Meteorologist said several spells of showers can be expected in the deep and shallow sea off the coast from Puttalam extending to Galle via Colombo and Kalutara.

Wind speed is expected to be from 20 to 40 kmph from South-Westerly direction in the sea surrounding the island. Wind speed is expected to be increased from 50 to 55 kmph in the coastal areas from Puttalam extending to Kankesanturai via Mannar and from Matara extending to Pottuvil via Hambantota. The aforesaid sea areas would remain fairly turbulent at times. Other coastal areas would remain moderate, Premachandra added.
