Drive-by shooting claims fifth victim


An individual was shot dead in Elakanda, Wattala, yesterday (14) by a gunman on a motorcycle, Police reported.

“The deceased was identified as 25-year-old Nipun Perera from Aliwatte, Mattakkuliya. The deceased had been exercising in a gym in Elakanda, Wattala and was gunned down while leaving the building. It is reported that he was involved in drug peddling and was the son of one identified as Aliwatte ‘Builder’ Nishantha.

Two three-wheelers and one car were also damaged in the shooting,” the Police said.

The incident is the fifth drive-by shooting reported this month.

A 42-year-old man was gunned down in Moragalla, Aluthgama on 3 June, morning and a 31-year-old man was gunned down in Panadura on the same afternoon. A 27-year-old man was shot dead in the Panchaliya area in Ahangama on 4 June and a close associate of the man shot dead in Ahangama was gunned down in Tangalle
5 June.

Meanwhile, addressing a media briefing on 6 June, Police said that the recent shootings reported from different parts of the country were linked to disputes in the drug trade.
