The Ministry of Transport will add 20 new buses to expand the Sisu Sariya school bus service for all main gateways to Colombo beginning today (15).
Minister of Transport, Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said that numerous programmes have been undertaken to better utilise public transport to provide relief to those affected by the increase in fuel prices.
“Parents must pay high prices for school vans to transport their children. Education Division officials, principals, and parents are demanding that the Sisu Sariya bus service to be expanded. As a result, we decided to increase the bus service. This service would also be expanded to 50 buses within a month,” he said.
Speaking on the subject, Ministry Secretary R.W.R. Premasiri noted that they have identified 20 new bus routes.
When asked if they hired new bus drivers because the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) is short staffed, he replied that because SLTB buses are not fully operational, they would be fine with increasing SisuSariya’s buses.
He did, however, noted that two new fuel filling stations will be established at the Makumbura Multipurpose Transport Centre and at Bastian Mawatha in Colombo Fort to refuel school buses and school vans.
