Friday to remain as a holiday for the public sector

Friday has been declared a holiday for all non-essential public sector employees, for a period of three months, as per a Government decision.

The Cabinet greenlighted Minister of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial Councils and Local Government Dinesh Gunawardena’s proposal to close all state institutions except for those providing essential services including water, electricity, health, defense, education, transport, port and air services on Fridays for the next three months.

The decision was taken in light of the prevailing fuel crisis, which has disrupted public transport, and has also created difficulties in sourcing fuel for private transportation as well.

Further, state employees will receive the required facilities to engage in agricultural activities in their backyards or elsewhere on Fridays, in an attempt to solve the food shortage that is expected to occur in the future.
