Police say 2,725 arrested over 9 May violence


Police have so far arrested 2,725 persons in connection with the violent clashes, between anti- and pro-government protesters, on 9 May, which killed at least 10 people and injured over 200 others.

On 9 May, supporters of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa attacked peaceful anti-government protesters demanding the resignations of the President, Prime Minister, and Cabinet over the current economic crisis.

During the last 48 hours, 21 people have been arrested in connection with the 9 May violence, according to Police spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa. He also stated that 857 suspects have been granted bail and 1038 have been remanded.
