Minister of Transport and Highways Dr. Bandula Gunawardena announced that a new train for schoolchildren and office workers will begin operations on the Kelani Valley line from ‘Waga’ to Colombo Fort on 15 June.
The Minister also said that a new train will be added to this Kelani Valley railway line soon with the goal of efficiently and effectively utilising the railway system to alleviate the country’s fuel crisis and highway congestion.
He made these remarks during an inspection tour of the Waga Railway Station. He also said that he hopes to reactivate the dormant Kelani Valley electric train project, simplify the operation of electric trains, and make the railway service more appealing to the public.
The Minister also directed railway authorities to safely park their private vehicles at the railway station and to provide the necessary facilities for the journey. R. W. R. Pemasiri, Secretary to the Ministry of Transport and Highways, Dhammika Jayasundara, General Manager of Railways, and V.S. Polwattage, Deputy General Manager (Commerce), also joined the inspection tour.
