Five goats were found stranded on the Gnanamalai beach in Talaimannar on 11 June, the Sri Lanka Navy said.
The Northern Naval Command found the goats on the beach in Gnanamalai where a single leg of the five animals were found tied together to prevent them from escaping. The goats were handed over to the Talaimannar Police due to an inability to trace their owners.
The goats are said to be tall and long-legged and not endemic to Sri Lanka. They may have been brought from India, where such goats are used in wrestling competitions. However, after they were handed over to the Talaimannar Police, a resident of the area claimed ownership. The person claiming ownership was produced before the Mannar Courts. The Court ordered the claimant to submit documents proving ownership and ordered that the goats be kept in Police custody until ownership is proved.
