System change needed, not ‘Prince Diyasena’ – AKD

People should not wait until ‘Prince Diyasena’ arrives to rebuild the country and instead push for solid political, social and economic reforms that would not change with regime changes, Jathika Jana Balawegaya (JJB) Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said, in response to rumours regarding business tycoon Dhammika Perera entering Parliament to replace Basil Rajapaksa.

There is no answer to the crisis without decisively changing economic policies and changing a political culture filled with fraud, corruption, waste and crime.  That is why it would not make a difference even if Dammika Perera comes to Parliament, Dissanayake stressed.

Addressing the Media yesterday (9), Dissanayake also said there is no point in bringing a mere document as the 21st Amendment to the Constitution without considering the JJBs’ proposals.

He presented the proposals that the crossover of MPs in the current political culture must end and relevant institutions be given powers to inspect the assets and liabilities of MPs without a complaint.

“The current absurd system of appointing ministers should be abolished and the Constitution should restrict the number of Cabinet ministers to 25,” he said.

“Prime Minister is set to have some of the powers of the President after the amendment to the new Constitution is passed. Since, the current Prime Minister is a person who has lost his mandate; a new Prime Minister should be elected six months after the passing of this Constitution.

We have made such important amendments. But there is a chance that an isolated document without important points is to be passed,” he said.
