Nine parties lobby Govt to approach Moscow

Leaders of nine political parties have made a written request to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to begin bilateral talks with Russia to purchase fuel from Moscow based on agreements reached with them.

The letter to the President had been signed by National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader MP Wimal Weerawansa, General Secretary of the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) MP Prof. Tissa Vitarana, General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka MP Dr. G. Weerasinghe, General Secretary of the Democratic Left Front MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Leader MP Udaya Gammanpila, MP A.L.M. Athaulla of the National Congress, MP Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera of the Wijeyadarani National Council, Chairman of the Yuthukama National Organisation MP Gevindu Kumaratunga and the General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Mahajana Pakshaya MP Asanka Navaratne.

The MPs stressed to the President that if he is not prepared to initiate talks to purchase fuel at concessionary rate from Russia, they will take to the street with the masses to force the issue. They have emphasised that the country’s fuel crisis has already shown signs of aggravating and urged the President to use his office to intervene on the matter to resolve the problem sooner than later.
