SLPP MP Johnston Fernando appeared before the Fort Magistrate yesterday (9) evening, after the Court of Appeal ordered him to surrender to the Magistrate’s Court before 8:00 p.m. on the same day.
He left the premises of the Fort Magistrate shortly after marking his appearance, as he was granted bail.
The Court of Appeal had issued the directive after taking into consideration the Writ Petition that was filed by Fernando, seeking an order preventing his arrest.
The Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court had issued a warrant to arrest the SLPP MP, following his involvement in the attack on anti-government protesters in Colombo on 9 May.
The warrant was issued after the Attorney General had named Fernando as a suspect in the attack, alongside several other SLPP politicians and loyalists who were found to have been involved in the incident.
The Magistrate also ordered the MP to report to the CID on a given date to provide a statement.
