Excise duties on ethyl alcohol up by Rs 100

Government of Sri Lanka (GoSL), by Gazette No. 2283/28 dated 8 June, has increased the excise duties (EDs) on ethyl alcohol (EA) by Rs 100 each, per litre, with effect from yesterday (9).

Further, imported EA used in the production of medicinal and industrial products of which the final products are not subjected to ED has been increased from the previous nought (0) to Rs 300 per litre up to 500 litres.

Other ED increases are, EA used by GoSL-approved research and educational institutions, hospitals and GoSL departments have been increased to Rs 700 and Rs 800 per litre each for locally supplied and imported EA, from 10,001 to 20,000 litres and for above 20,000 litres, Rs 1,100 (locally supplied) and Rs 1,200 (imported) each per litre.

EA used in the production of medicinal and industrial products of which the final products are not subjected to ED: From 501 to 10,000 litres, Rs 700 and Rs 800 each per litre for locally supplied and imported EA. From 10,001 to 20,000 litres, Rs 800 and Rs 900 each per litre for locally supplied and imported ethyl alcohol, and above 20,000 litres, Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,300 per litre each for locally supplied and imported EA.

EA used in the manufacture of products for export or for the washing of machinery and used for the manufacture of these products for export, of which the final products are not subjected to ED: From 501 to 10,000 litres, Rs 700 and Rs 800 each per litre for locally supplied and imported EA. From 10,001 to 20,000 litres, Rs 800 and Rs 900 per litre each for locally supplied and imported EA and above 20,000 litres, Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,300 per litre each.

Meanwhile, the EDs on impure EA spirits (technical spirits/weak spirits) have been increased to Rs 500 and Rs 1,200 for each litre-locally supplied and imported. In related developments, ED on EA used by GoSL-approved research and educational institutions, hospitals and GoSL departments, up to 10,000 litres remains free, for both local supplies and imports as in the past and up to 20,000 litres for the Medical Supply Unit of the Health Ministry also remains free as in the past.

Also, EA used and up to 500 litres, in the production of medicinal and industrial products of which the final products are not subjected to ED also remains free of EDs as in the past, while EDs of Rs 10 each (locally supplied and imports) per litre, applicable to EA used in the manufacture of alcohol, in the past, also remains unchanged presently.
