Colombo Fort Magistrate, Thilina Gamage yesterday (8), issued a warrant for the arrest of MP Johnston Fernando based on submissions made by the Attorney General regarding the 9 May incidents where anti-Government protesters were attacked by SLPP supporters.

Additional Solicitor General Ayesha Jinasena on 1 June informed Colombo Fort Magistrate, Thilina Gamage Fernando and Municipal Councillor Mahinda Kahandagama have been named as suspects in the case filed in connection with the incident.

SLPP MP Sanath Nishantha and three other suspects connected to the 9 May incident were also further remanded till 15 June by the Colombo Fort Magistrate yesterday (8). Further 13 suspects including MP Milan Jayatilaka who were remanded in relation to the said incident were granted bail yesterday (8) on the basis that there was no evidence of their direct involvement into the incident based on the CCTV footages of the incident.

Further, the Attorney General is due to make submissions to the Court on 15 June based on the report submitted by the CID head of the investigations into the incident, SDIG Kamal Silva to the Attorney General as to whether or not Western Province SDIG DeshabanduTennakoon should be arrested or not.

Previously, IGP C.D. Wickramaratne informed Court that he would appoint SDIG Kamal Silva, who is in charge of the Crimes Division, to oversee the investigations into the incident. This was when Wickramaratne appeared in Court as he was summoned to explain why the order of the Attorney General to transfer SDIG of the Western Province, Deshabandu Tennakoon, has not been implemented.
