Vendors selling overpriced rice to be fined, imprisoned


The Colombo District Office of the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) caught several vendors who sold rice for at higher prices on Tuesday (7). CAA Director General Asela Bandara said, no action has been taken so far to amend or cancel the Gazette Notification regarding the maximum retail price of rice or to increase the existing price.

Under the Gazette Notification No.82 dated 02.05.2022 the price of 1kg Nadu rice is Rs220, 1 kg of Samba rice is Rs230 and a kg of Keeri Samba is Rs260.

He warned island-wide raids are being carried out in connection with the sale of overpriced rice. If a person is convicted in a related case, the Court can impose a fine of Rs 100,000 to Rs 500,000, or six months imprisonment for a single business or both. The court could also  impose a minimum fine of Rs 500,000 to a maximum of Rs 5,000,000 on a private company depending on the severity of the offence.
