JUST IN: MP Johnston Fernando surrenders

Former Minister Johnston Fernando surrendered before the Fort Magistrate’s Court a short while ago (09).

He had surrendered himself before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, at Gamage’s official residence.

Earlier today, the Court of Appeal ordered the former Minister to surrender before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court before 08:00 pm tonight.

Accordingly, as per an order issued by the Appeal Court, the warrant issued by the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court for the arrest of Fernando was not due to be enforced by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) till 08:00 pm.

The order for Fernando to surrender came following the consideration of a writ application filed by the former minister seeking a court order preventing his arrest.

Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday (08) issued a warrant for the arrest of Fernando in connection with the violent attacks that took place near Galle Face and Temple Trees on 09 May.
