Farmers lament the destruction of more than 500 acres of paddy lands in Kantale, Peramaduwa, Medagama, and Thalgaswewa due to a disease caused by worms. It is said to be spreading rapidly these days.
Farmers claim the situation cropped up as a result of the use of government-supplied compost fertiliser on their crops. There is no appropriate oil in the market for worm disease, and farmers are facing significant challenges as a result of the widespread availability of various types of oil and their application to crops.
According to farmers, no government official has visited the Peramaduwa farmland to investigate the situation. Farmers say that due to the devastation caused by this worm this season, they will not be able to drink even porridge as they did last month.
