Sri Lanka’s basketball community is mourning the death of Janaka Fernando, who died at the age of 43 after a brief illness. A product of Maharagama Central, Janaka first represented Colombo Basketball Club and then joined Sri Lanka Army. He was with Army for nearly two decades, and went onto captain the basketball team.
Known as balanced and fair man, he was immensely popular among the community for his common touch and easy-going attitude. Having obtained his refereeing licence from the international body FIBA in 2011, he was making steady progress in his career until his untimely death on Tuesday.
