Minister of Power and Energy Kanchana Wijesekera says that the request made by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to increase electricity tariffs will not be submitted to the Cabinet.

He said the decision was taken because the CEB does not assist renewable energy generation plans.

The Minister pointed out that the CEB should allow renewable projects to proceed and reduce the cost of generation rather than increasing tariffs to pay their own salaries.

He revealed that the CEB has a collective agreement to increase its salaries by 25% every three years.

Minister Wijesekera said that due to the lack of interest in renewable energy plans or cost reduction in generation, the cost of salaries and generation are exerted on the consumers and highlighted the necessity to change this system.
