People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said Minister of Housing and Urban Development Prasanna Ranatunga, who was convicted by the Colombo High Court for threatening a businessman and demanding
Rs 64 million, has no ethical right to function as a lawmaker.
Hettiarachchi said though Ranatunga’s MP post has not been brought into question from a legal perspective, it still has to be debated whether the Minister concerned has the ethical right to continue to work as a public representative after being convicted.
Hettiarachchi added that Ranatunga has been found guilty of abusing powers vested in him, instead of using them to better the country.
The PAFFREL Executive Director said foreign investors will think twice before coming here, due to people in high places being involved in these extortion rackets.
