Train derails after killing two jumbos

A freight train heading for Trincomalee was derailed after crashing into two wild elephants that were on the railway track, between Habarana and Palugaswewa. Both animals were killed.

Trains services from Colombo Fort to Batticaloa and Trincomalee were disrupted until June 4 due to the derailment. The accident occurred near the 133-mile post between the Habarana and Palugaswewa railway stations. The train was heading from Seeduwa to Trincomalee’s Preetama flour factory.

Dr. Sameera Kaligu Arachchi, of the Wildlife Conservation Department’s Giritale Veterinary Unit, arrived at the scene and performed an autopsy on the two dead elephants.
