St. Anthony’s take honours in drawn game


The 103rd ‘Battle of the Blues’ (Central Hills) between Trinity and St Anthony’s ended in a draw at the Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy on Saturday.

The highlight of the match were fine half centuries by Antonian batters Mohamed Aaqil (86) – who laid down the foundation –  Lahiru Abeysinghe (73) and Chandimal Herath (61 and 54*), while for Trinity youth cap Ranuda Somaratne scored a brisk half century (50).

Youth cap Traveen Mathews was the pick of the bowlers for the Antonians. The spinner took 5 for 70.

Antonians took an 80 runs lead in the first innings. After posting a huge 288 they bowled out Trinity for 208. Antonians were in deep trouble in their second innings, as at one point they were precariously placed at 35 for 5, but a solid unbroken 5th wicket partnership of 69 runs between Chandimal Herath (54 *) and Lahiru Abeysinghe (18*) took them out of danger.

Trinity ended on 49/1 at close after being set a target of 185.

Former Trinity and Army SC cricketer Major General Nihal Marambe was the Chief Guest.
