Navy seizes ganja worth Rs 105M

The Navy conducted special search operations in the general area of Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Kayts and in the Allappiddy area on 3 June where two suspects in possession of more than 350 kg of Kerala cannabis were apprehended. A car was also seized in the operation.

The seized stock of Kerala cannabis had a gross street value of over Rs 105 million.  The suspects, aged 43 and 46, were identified as residents of Allappiddy  and Mullaitivu.

Initially, the naval ships Kanchadeva, Velusumana and Northern Naval Command under the Northern Naval Command in collaboration with the Police Special Task Force (STF) conducted the special operation in Allappiddy, Kayts Island on 3 June. During a search of a suspicious house, a suspect was arrested with a stock of 141 kg Kerala cannabis and another 605 kilos packed in 59 parcels and hidden in four bags.

 Also, the Wettalakeni Naval Division of the Northern Naval Command in collaboration with the Police STF conducted a search operation in the Vivekananda Nagar area in Kilinochchi on the afternoon of 3 June, a suspect was arrested along with a stock of 208 kilos and 545 grams of Kerala cannabis also packed in 91 parcels and stashed in five bags. A car attempting to transport the stash was also seized.

 In the fist instance, the suspect and the car were handed over to the Kayts Police Station for further action. In the second incident, the suspect was handed over to the Kilinochchi Police Special Task Force for action.
