Limited private buses to ply from today

Private bus owners said the overall bus services will be reduced to 10-15 per cent from today (6).

Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association President, Gemunu Wijeratne, said though there was a supply of diesel in Colombo, the fuel scarcity still exists in outstations such as Mannar, Vavuniya, Gamapaha Districts, Mawanella, Polonnaruwa, Badulla and Puttalam.

“These areas were neglected by Ceypetco and were not provided with diesel since they took a decision to provide diesel to selected areas. Officials who took such decisions and the Minister of Power and Energy should bear the responsibility for the reduction in the number of buses,” he added.

Wijeratne added that only buses which get diesel from SLTB-owned depots will function from, today (6).

He further said the operation of long-distance buses has been disrupted due to the fuel shortage, as buses have queue up for days at times to obtain fuel.

“There will be buses, functioning in Colombo if diesel is provided, yet the operation of private buses will be low,” he added.

Meanwhile, as Wijeratne noted the Petroleum Distributors’ Association has informed that diesel will be distributed only to selected petrol stations on a priority list, due to limited stocks of diesel.
