Sri Lanka responds to dispute over detained Russian plane

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs says the matter regarding the detention of Aeroflot passenger aircraft flight SU-289 currently at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is still pending final determination of the Court and is also under consultation through normal diplomatic channels.

On 2 June, the Commercial High Court of the Western Province issued an Enjoining Order on the Aeroflot flight restraining it from taking off from BIA.

The case relates to a commercial dispute between the plaintiff, Celestial Aviation Trading 10 Limited against the first defendant, the public joint stock company Aeroflot and the second Defendant, Acting Head of Air Navigation at Airport and Aviation Services of Sri Lanka (AASL) N. C Abeywardene.

The Russian carrier yesterday announced that it is suspending commercial flights to Sri Lanka in view of the issue.
