Doctor ordered to pay Rs 10M compensation


Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja, on Friday (3) ordered a specialist doctor, who pleaded guilty to a charge of causing a traffic accident, which resulted in the death of a Police officer on duty, to pay compensation of Rs 10 million to the closest relatives of the victim.

The deceased was identified as Police Inspector Ajantha Gamini Perera, who had served as the trainer of the Police boxing team.

Judge Ranaraja stated that the accused at the time of the accident had failed to be in control of her vehicle.

He noted that due to the severity of the accident the vehicle driven by the accused had crashed into two other vehicles damaging them as well.

He then ordered the accused doctor to pay compensation of Rs. 500,000 to the owners of those two damaged vehicles as well. The accused specialist doctor, who pleaded guilty to the offence, was identified as Kavinga Gunawardene.

The Attorney General had indicted the accused before the High Court on six counts and on charges of causing the death of a Police officer, reckless driving and on failure to prevent an accident, which had taken place in the Boralesgamuwa area, on 30 December four years ago.
