Gampaha High Court Judge Nimal Ranaweera on Friday (3) acquitted former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa and businessman Thiru Nadesan from the misappropriation of State funds case.
Announcing the verdict of the trial, the Judge stated that he was acquitting the two accused from the charges filed against them and releasing them from the case, as the prosecution had failed to prove the three indictments filed against the duo sans a reasonable doubt.
The case had been filed against Rajapaksa and Nadesan on three charges for misappropriating State funds for the purchase of a 16 acre land in Dompe, Malwana and constructing a luxury house, swimming pool and a farmhouse on it.
The prosecution was represented by Senior State Counsel Krisanka Fernando on the advice of Deputy Solicitor General Shanil Kularatne.
A group of Lawyers led by President’s Counsels Navin Marapana and Gamini Marapana appeared for the accused former Minister while another group of lawyers led by Saliya Peiris PC appeared for accused businessman Nadesan.
