Storm batters seven districts; thousands affected

The prevailing inclement weather condition accompanied by heavy winds had wreaked havoc in seven districts. The Ratnapura, Kegalle, Kandy, Kalutara, Gampaha, Colombo and Matara districts are among them, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) said yesterday (2).

A total of 22,338 persons from 5,357 families had been affected and one DMC official, who was distributing relief in the Ratnapura District, had died after being trapped in flood waters. A total of 690 persons from 192 displaced families had been sent to 10 safety centres.

The DMC added that 174 houses had been partly damaged affecting 579 persons from 147 families. The inclement weather conditions had affected 42 Divisional Secretariat divisions in seven districts.

Along with the prevailing weather conditions the water level in reservoirs as well as the Attanagalu Oya, Kelani ganga, Kalu ganga, Gin ganga and Nilwala ganga have increased. The people living in the highlands of Attanagalu Oya had been affected by mini flood conditions. Several lowlands in the Ja-ela, Wattala and Gampaha Divisional Secretariat Divisions had been inundated by heavy rains. 

Several lowland areas and downstream of the Attanagalu Oya could be inundated as rains increase. Floods are receding to a considerable level further up the Kelani ganga.

Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) yesterday said that the landslide warning alerts issued to Colombo, Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura Districts will be effective until the further notice.

The Level 3 Watch Red landslide warning alerts issued to Ratnapura, Kalawana, Elapatha, Kuruwita and Eheliyagoda DS divisions in the Ratnapura District will be in place until further notice.

Level 1 Watch Yellow landslide warning alerts issued to Seethawaka and Padukka Divisional Secretariat (DS) divisions and the surrounding areas in the Colombo District, Yakkalamulla, Baddegama and Nagoda DS divisions and the surrounding areas in the Galle District, Ingiriya, Palindanuwara, Walallawita and Bulathsinhala DS divisions and surrounding areas in the Kalutara District, Pasbage Korale DS Division and the surrounding areas in the Kandy District, Ruwanwella, Deraniyagala and Yatiyantota and the surrounding areas in the Kegalle District, Athuraliya and Pasgoda DS divisions and the surrounding areas in the Matara District, Ambagamuwa DS Division and the surrounding areas in the Nuwara Eliya District and Godakawela and Kahawatta DS divisions and the surrounding areas in the Ratnapura District will be valid until further notice.

Level 2 Watch Amber landslide warning alerts, issued to Dehiowita, Warakapola, Bulathkohupitiya and Kegalle DS divisions and the surrounding areas in the Kegalle District, Kotapola and Pitabeddara DS divisions and the surrounding areas in the Matara District and Kiriella, Pelmadulla, Ayagama and Nivithigala DS divisions in the Ratnapura District will also be valid until further notice.
