Court refuses to ban IUSF protest


Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amerasinghe, while dismissing a request, made by the Cinnamon Gardens Police yesterday, said he will not issue orders prohibiting peaceful protests or demonstrations.

He made this remark in response to a request made to Court by Cinnamon Garderns Police, urging him to issue an order banning a demonstration which was scheduled to be staged in Colombo yesterday by the IUSF, inconveniencing the public.

Explaining further Chief Magistrate Amerasinghe observed that the Court should not be moved to issue orders, to ban peaceful protests or demonstrations.

He further added if such protests or demonstrations were to hinder civilian life in anyway, then the Police should use its powers to arrest the suspects and disperse such gatherings.

Cinnamon Gardens Police had urged the Court, to issue an order to ban a planned protest march to be held by the IUSF, via Cinnamon Gardens, Colombo, C. W. W. Kannangara Avenue, Flower Road, Nelum Pokuna roundabout and a few other nearby roads, impeding the public.
