The CID on 1 June informed Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage that they will be seeking instructions from Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam with regard to the case filed against five suspects, including Minister of Trade, Commerce and Food Security Nalin Fernando and former Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage, who have been charged with misappropriation of State funds.
Fernando and Aluthgamage, have been charged by the CID, before the said Court, over the misappropriation of Government funds by importing items to be distributed among sports clubs and associations during the run up to the 2015 Presidential Election, whilst Aluthgamage had functioned as the then Minister of Sports.
When the case was taken up, Magistrate Gamage, ordered the overseas travel ban imposed on suspect Minister Nalin Fernando, to be temporarily lifted till 30 June.
He gave this order having perused submissions made to him by the Counsel for the suspect, who mentioned that as his client has to go overseas to attend a seminar and to temporarily release his passport impounded by the Court.
