Former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Thirukumar Nadesan were acquitted by the Gampaha High Court this morning (03) over the Malwana property case.
Rajapaksa and Nadesan, husband of former Minister Nirupama Rajapaksa who was named in the Pandora Papers, were acquitted on grounds of failing to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt.
The case was filed by the Attorney General, on three counts of embezzling government funds to buy a 16-acre land in Dompe, Malwana, Mapitigama, on which a mansion, inclusive of a swimming pool and a farm, was built.
The verdict was initially supposed to be given on 13 May, however, Rajapaksa and Nadesan both failed to appear in court due to the prevailing crisis in Sri Lanka, and ill health, respectively, and were instead represented by their lawyers. The verdict was then postponed to 03 June.
