Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, by Gazette No. 2282/24, dated Tuesday (31 May), has removed the 15 per cent import duty on sanitary pads, effective Wednesday (1 June).
However, VAT on such items which was previously 8 per cent has been increased to 12 per cent with immediate effect, ie from Tuesday (31 May). Further, other import taxes on sanitary pads such as PAL (10 per cent) and Cess (15 per cent) remain unchanged.
In other developments, Customs duty of 15 per cent each, on baby and adult diapers however remain, while VAT on those items too have been increased from the previous eight per cent to 12 per cent, each. Baby and adult diapers also continue to be subject to a PAL of 10 per cent each and cessof 45 per cent, or Rs 450 a kg, each, whichever is more.
