At a meeting held yesterday (1) at the Irrigation Ministry to discuss ways and means of overcoming the country’s economic downturn and popularising the concept of cultivation, Minister of Irrigation, Sports and Youth Affairs Roshan Ranasinghe said, if the “system change” demanded by the country’s youth is to be implemented, the Government must change course immediately.
He said, if it is implemented properly, Sri Lanka will emerge as a strong nation in the international arena.
Ranasinghe said, his Ministry is responsible for developing the country’s irrigation system, and urged the Ministry officials to reduce waste significantly and channel resources towards the revival of the irrigation network.
He further said, to overcome the country’s present agricultural issues, it was critical that water should not be wasted, while taking measures to ensure its conservation and proper management.
He also advised the officials to provide the necessary chemical fertiliser for crop growth to avoid the possibility of a famine during the latter part of this year.
