The Colombo Magistrate’s Court today (02) rejected a request made by the Cinnamon Gardens Police seeking an order to prevent the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) protest scheduled to happen today.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe rejected the order on the grounds that the court will not issue orders against peaceful protests.

He stated, however, that police are authorized to arrest protesters, as per Article 95 of the Criminal Code Procedure, if the conduct of the protesters causes inconvenience to the public.

The Cinnamon Gardens Police sought an order to prevent the IUSF protesters from entering several roads, including Kannangara Mawatha, Flower Road and the Nelum Pokuna Roundabout.

The IUSF is scheduled to launch a protest march later today, from the Viharamahadevi Park, to the University Grants Commission (UGC).
