BASL unimpressed with CID probe

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), in a letter to Attorney General Sanjay Rajaratnam, raised concerns on the investigations conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) into the 9 May incidents where anti-Government protesters were attacked by SLPP supporters.

The BASL said even with the lapse of three weeks since the incident and despite clear evidence on those involved, it is of concern that only a few of the perpetrators have been arrested and produced in Court.

“We are also concerned that the CID has failed to arrest and produce persons who have been clearly identified and who instigated the violence and conspired to commit the violence,” the BASL added. The BASL also raised concerns on the inaction of the CID to take steps against Senior Police Officers, despite there being clear evidence of dereliction of duty on their part, while further saying, “We observe that no steps have been taken up to now to take disciplinary action against Senior Officers who are responsible for the same.”

“We urge you as the Attorney General to take decisive steps in this regard. If the CID has failed to follow the instructions of the Attorney General, we urge you to take appropriate measures to ensure that there is no further erosion of public confidence in the criminal justice process and the institutions concerned,” the BASL further said.
