Farmers in Ampara District, the nation’s rice bowl, have decided to file a case against the State and three companies for failing to provide fertiliser for the Yala Season as promised.
This proposal was made by President of Ampara District Agrarian Business Committee C.H. Kumara at the season meeting held at the Resident Agrarian Management Centre in Ampara.
The Government Agent and the Assistant Commissioner of Agrarian Centre in Ampara told the farmers earlier that sufficient fertiliser will be provided for cultivation in the Yala Season. It was pledged that three companies have come forward for this agreement.
The farmers said, the companies had on several occasions given very little fertiliser and that the fertiliser was substandard.
They also alleged that the fertiliser companies had misled the farmers.
In view of this situation, necessary steps are being taken to file a case within the first week of June. Considering the previous situation, action will be taken to obtain compensation by submitting a letter with the participation of the representatives of the farmers’ unions, Kumara said.
