AG instructs CCDB to charge Gnanasara Thera


The Colombo Crime Detection Bureau (CCDB) yesterday (31), informed the Colombo Fort Magistrate, Thilina Gamage, that the Attorney General, Sanjay Rajaratnam, has instructed them to file charges, based on Provisions contained in Section 291 of the Penal Code, against the General Secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Ven. Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thera, over his use of words inflaming religious tensions among different ethnic groups.

CCDB had begun a probe against the BBS General Secretary, over the latter’s controversial interpretation and remarks to the media of contents of the Holy Quran, on 12 March eight years ago.

Later, CCDB had submitted the case abstracts for the AG’s perusal and he had advised and recommended that CCDB, should venture to file charges against the monk concerned, based on the aforesaid Provisions contained in the Penal Code.

Senior State Counsel Shiraz Noordeen prosecuted on behalf of the AG’s Department, while Attorney-at-Law Premanath C. Dolewatta, appeared on behalf of the BBS General Secretary.

Magistrate Gamage ordered further hearing of the case to be taken up on 14 November.
